FAQs

Why should I use a South Paw sitter?

Your pet will remain in his or her familiar, secure environment and follow his or her customary diet and exercise routine. Your pet is not exposed to illness of other animals. Most importantly, your pet receives lots of love and personal attention while you are away.

I have never used a pet sitter before. How can I make sure I am getting a trustworthy, dependable pet sitter to care for my pets and property?

We understand the responsibility of caring for your pets and property. We take this responsibility very seriously. We are insured, bonded, and professional. Shari, the owner, has been working with dogs for over 20 years, is a dog trainer and is pet first aid certified.

What does South Paw Pet Services typically provide for a client when they are out of town?

Our typical client requests 1-4 visits per day. There are no time limits on our visits, so we’ll take as much time as your pets need. We treat each client and their pets as individuals. We will perform each service the client has requested in addition to our normal visit services. During each visit, we will always provide fresh water, food, clean the litter box and/or crates as directed, potty breaks, administer medications as requested, companionship, exercise & belly rubs. We are happy to accommodate most special requests as we want your pets to be as happy and comfortable as possible while you are away. We will also look after your home by bringing in your mail and newspapers, alternating lights and drapery, setting out and bringing in the garbage and recycling, and watering your plants. This gives your home a “lived in” appearance while you are away.

Do you charge for the initial consultation?

The initial consultation is always FREE for new customers.

Is it possible to have a consultation before each time I leave?

Certainly. Phone consultations are always free and we encourage those. However, if you prefer a face to face meeting beyond the initial consultation, there is a $10 fee.

What information do I need to provide at the initial consultation?

You will need to fill out our forms and contract. We need a copy of your dog or cat’s current vaccine history. Your dog or cat has to be up to date on his/her rabies vaccinations. We also ask for a key, if you decide to allow us to be your petsitter. Rest assured your key will be in good hands and no one else will have access to it.

Do you have references that I can call?

Absolutely!  We will gladly provide you with references if desired.

Will you be the only pet sitter, or will there be others in my home?

We believe that having one, regular pet sitter is best for your pets and your peace of mind. We provide all the pet sitting services ourselves. If for some reason we are unable to perform a pet sit for any reason, we do have back up pet sitters available and you will be informed ahead of time.

 What happens in severe weather?

South Paw requests the name and phone number of a person living nearby. If the South Paw pet care provider is physically unable to reach your home due to impassable roads, we will contact that person. Your pets’ health and well-being are our utmost concern and we will contact you as soon as possible to keep you informed of these events.

Can you let me know how my pet is doing while I’m away?

Absolutely! We will keep detailed notes for each visit. We will call or text during or after each visit, or send a picture if you’d like.

Do you charge a holiday fee?

Yes, we do. Our holiday rate is $25 per visit on the following holidays:
New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day.

Will you share pet sitting duties with our neighbors or friends?

For liability purposes, we will not share pet sitting duties with anyone other than South Paw pet sitters. There are stipulations in our insurance, and sharing duties can become confusing, especially if the pet has a special diet, requires medication administration, or has other special needs.

What forms of payment do you accept and when are payments expected?

We accept cash, check, Visa, Master card, American Express as payment for services. The balance of the contract is due no later than the first day of service. For more information on this and our standard operating procedures, please visit our Policies & Procedures page.

So, how do I get started if I want to use your service?

In order to provide the absolute best pet care, we believe it is necessary for you and your pets to get to know their pet sitter and discuss your specific needs. To facilitate this, we provide a free introductory meeting with each of our new clients before we begin. Please call us at 757-963-5015 or e-mail us at info@southpawpetservices.com. We will be happy to schedule an appointment at your convenience. We look forward to working with you and your pets.
